Dr. Kathleen Hurley is the Founder and Co-Director of Sage Psychology, PLLC.

Dr. Hurley began working in the public education school system over ten years ago as a school psychologist, working with students ranging from preschool through high school and the transition to college. Dr. Hurley earned her Master’s in School Psychology from Adelphi University, where she is now also an adjunct professor. She earned her doctorate in School Psychology from Saint John’s University and completed the Post-Graduate Specialization in Neuropsychology at Fielding Graduate University.  She is a licensed New York State psychologist and nationally certified school psychologist. In addition to her clinical and assessment practice, Dr. Hurley supervises graduate students during their practicum and internship experiences and has been invited to present at local schools, agencies, and professional conferences. Dr. Hurley has presented at national conferences including the New England Psychological Association, the New York Association of School Psychologists, the National Association of School Psychologists, and Learning Disabilities Association of America.

 


Dr. Hurley is a member of the American Psychological Association, the New York Association of School Psychologists, and the National Association of School Psychologists. Dr. Hurley has extensive experience in psychological and neuropsychological assessments. Her goal is always to identify the strengths and weaknesses in individuals and design unique recommendations based on the individualized assessment data. Her testing expertise includes the identification of autism spectrum disorder, specific learning disorders, emotional disorders, as well as attention and executive functioning deficits. She strives to offer a supportive and collaborative evaluation environment to identify short- and long-term goals while using evidence-based strategies to meet these goals successfully. Dr. Hurley has significant experience supporting individuals who are seeking appropriate educational placements, gifted and talented evaluations, Office of People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) services and supports, as well as college, medical, and/or law school testing accommodations.

Dr. Hurley utilizes a variety of therapeutic modalities to support her therapy clients. In private practice, she specializes in treating and supporting children, adolescents, adults, parents, couples, and families impacted by emotional concerns, relationship issues, and life transitions. Dr. Hurley works with individuals who have mental health challenges including anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, autism spectrum disorder, trauma, and stress. Dr. Hurley works with clients to focus on their individual needs and tailors a treatment approach that is unique to the strengths and resiliency of the client through a variety of interventions including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, Psychodynamic therapy, and Eye Movement Desensitization & Processing (EMDR).

Dr. Melanie Popovits is a Founder and Co-Director of Sage Psychology, where she is dedicated to fostering mental wellness through comprehensive, client-centered care. She earned her Doctorate in School Psychology from Adelphi University and completed her undergraduate studies at St. John’s University. Currently employed as a school psychologist, Dr. Popovits works to support students in thriving academically, socially, and emotionally. In addition to her role as a school psychologist, Dr. Popovits has gained a wealth of experience in conducting comprehensive psychological assessments, using her knowledge of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral evaluations to provide nuanced insights and tailored recommendations that help guide individualized treatment plans. Beyond her direct clinical work, Dr. Popovits has presented at national conferences, including the Eastern Psychological Association and the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP).

In her practice, Dr. Popovits is dedicated to providing evidence-based interventions that are thoughtfully tailored to meet the unique needs of her clients. With a strong emphasis on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), she blends proven therapeutic approaches with a deep understanding of each individual's personal strengths and challenges. Dr. Popovits believes in
fostering a collaborative environment where clients are empowered to take an active role in addressing their concerns, building resilience, and developing strategies that propel them toward their personal goals. Specializing in the support of adolescents and young adults, she offers guidance as they navigate the complexities of life's transitions, from academic pressures to personal development.

In addition, Dr. Popovits has an extensive background in working with individuals on the Autism Spectrum, drawing on her experience as a registered behavior technician. This foundation enables her to skillfully integrate Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) techniques with other therapeutic modalities, providing a comprehensive approach to supporting her clients' behavioral, social, and emotional needs. With her diverse expertise and compassionate approach, Dr. Popovits strives to make a meaningful impact in the lives of the individuals and families she serves. She is currently working towards licensure and under the supervision of Dr. Kathleen Hurley.

Dr. Sydney Donovan is a school psychologist working towards her clinical license at Sage Psychology. She earned her Doctorate in School Psychology from Adelphi University and completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Dr. Donovan developed her therapeutic approaches at Stony Brook University, where she conducted therapy sessions with college students, and has worked with K–12 students across a range of school settings. Currently employed as a school psychologist in a public school, Dr. Donovan is committed to supporting students in reaching their full potential. Through her experience conducting comprehensive psychological assessments with a diverse population of individuals, she brings a nuanced understanding of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning.

 

During her doctoral training at Adelphi University, Dr. Donovan served as both a research assistant and a graduate teaching assistant, where she supported aspiring psychologists in developing their skills in psychoeducational assessments and deepened her own understanding of research methodology. Her dissertation focused on multicultural awareness and implicit racial bias among teachers, aiming to shed light on how educators' perceptions can influence their relationships with students. The goal of her research is to inform and empower school staff to adopt more inclusive, culturally responsive practices that foster stronger connections with children and support their long-term success.

 

In her therapeutic work, Dr. Donovan takes an integrative and client-centered approach, drawing from a range of evidence-based modalities to support her clients. With a focus on supporting children, adolescents, and young adults, Dr. Donovan provides guidance through the many transitions they face, from managing academic demands to exploring their identity and enhancing their personal growth. Her experience includes working with clients facing anxiety, trauma, autism spectrum-related challenges, and familial stress. Dr. Donovan tailors each treatment plan to fit the unique needs and strengths of her clients, incorporating techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness practices, and psychodynamic principles to promote lasting growth and resilience. She is currently working towards licensure and under the supervision of Dr. Kathleen Hurley.
